Opportunities for Local Sub-contractors
We know that broadband access in some parts of the Peak District is still poor and with more and more households and businesses using computers and laptops for daily tasks we think it’s vital that people should have access to a good broadband service.
This is where we need your help!
Currently there are some households and businesses that only have access to broadband with a speed less than 2Mbit/s (mega bits per second) which is below the Government target.
To address this problem the Government is investing £530 million to ensure that at least 90 per cent of homes and businesses have access to an enhanced broadband service by 2015.
To help support this, British Telecom (BT) is providing an additional investment of £2.5 billion to lay fibre-optic cables allowing much faster upload and download speeds for broadband services throughout the UK.
Areas that have already received new cables/due to receive new cables include Glossop (including Gamesley) and New Mills (including Hayfield).
For those communities not covered in BT’s roll-out – and who regularly experience poor broadband access – we need you to let us know so that the County Council can ask the Government for additional funding.
Please go to www.derbyshire.gov.uk/broadbandsurvey/ to help us to identify where access could be improved and to demonstrate a strong demand for broadband provision in specific areas.
Enabling enhanced broadband means that you will be able to buy fast broadband packages through relevant service providers. It does not mean you will receive enhanced speed to your current services.
If you want to find out about fast broadband packages you need to establish what exchange your house is connected to as it may not always be obvious.
