Licensing

The Council administers many types of licences aimed at protecting public health and safety and avoiding nuisance.

Licences are required for taxis, sale of alcohol, late night refreshment, regulated entertainment and lotteries, and to regulate a range of commercial and non-commercial activities, including pet shops, street trading, charitable collections and much more. If you propose to open a new business or arrange any fund raising event, it is always best to check if any licence or permission is required.

Betting shops and other premises, where gambling takes place, also require a licence.

The following establishments must either be registered or obtain a licence:

The Council is also required to maintain a register of all scrap metal dealers who live or operate their business in the Borough.

To find out how to apply, contact the Licensing Team, or ask at any Customer Service Centre. We will respond to general enquiries, and complaints, within three working days. If you're planning an activity that might need a licence, contact us as early as you can.
