Following public consultation on the future of butchers' shops licensing, the board of the Food Standards Agency decided on 10 March 2005 not to propose new butchers' licensing when the current regulations lapse on 1 January 2006.
After this date, butchers selling raw meat and ready to eat food will be subject to new EU hygiene regulations and will not require a licence to operate.
