1. Introduction
The 2006 playground audit has built upon the information gained in the audit of 2005. The following factors have been considered in the audit:
- Siting of the playground
Access, Space/ Development potential, Area context (availability of other sites);
- Play Value
Elements of play, informal and formal play, user stations;
- Security
Casual supervision and visibility, fencing/ boundaries, vandalism, anti-social behaviour;
- Usage
Current and latent;
- Condition
Equipment, maintenance and safety surfacing.
The audit identifies a heirachy of play sites:
- Destination site – important to a large area serving the wider community;
- Strategic site – provides important localised play serving a local community;
- Local sites – provides play facilities to a limited area.
While the value of local play provision is recognised, there is also a need to provide a number of destination sites to provide play in the wider regional context.
Below is a chart summarising the scores and main issues at each site. Sites shown in green are identified for BIG funding. Sites in blue have, or will be funded from other sources. Sites in yellow have been funded in the 2006-2007 programme by the Borough Council.
