The Civic Regalia

The civic regalia in use in High Peak is as follows:

Mayor's chain

Mayoral chain of office

This was given by His Grace the Duke of Devonshire, KC, in 1930 to the Borough of Buxton.

It was made by the Goldsmith's and Silversmith's Company of London.

High Peak Coat of Arms

The chapters are 18 carat gold, engraved with the names of early Mayors of the Borough of Buxton. Later chapters were added with a value of 9 carat, but these were removed in 1979, to make a chain of more manageable size and without mixed gold.

The chain incorporates a medallion showing the Coat of Arms of the Dukes of Devonshire, supported by two bucks.

The High Peak medallion hangs from the chain, supported by a medallion of St. Ann (patron saint of the Buxton springs).

The badge of office was commissioned in 1979 from Thomas Fattorini & Sons of Birmingham and shows the High Peak Coat of Arms. It is 18 carat gold.

Chains for the Deputy Mayor and Mayor's Consort

There are two - one passed down from the former Buxton Borough, and the other from the former Glossop Borough. The Mayor's Consort is able to choose which chain to use during the year.

The history of these chains is not clear. The Buxton chain is gold - it was presented in 1930. The Glossop chain is silver gilt.

Both display the appropriate Coat of Arms.

The Mace

The Mace was given in 1919 to the Borough of Buxton by Mr and Mrs T Ryan of Sherbrook, Buxton.

This is 42½ inches in length of silver or silver gilt.

The crown is surmounted by a ball and cross over the bowl.

The bowl is decorated with a raised and coloured shield and the motto is inscribed. (Both of these are of the former Borough of Buxton).
