The census provides us with the most complete source of information about the UK population. It is conducted every ten years and the most recent census took place on Sunday 29 April 2001.
It is the only survey that provides a detailed picture of the entire population, and is unique because it covers everyone at the same time and asks the same core questions everywhere. This makes it easy to compare different parts of the country.
The information the census provides feeds into how we, as a Local Authority, target our resources more effectively in terms of planning for housing, education, health and transport services for years to come.
The table below shows a breakdown of some of the Key Statistics for the High Peak Local Authority obtained from the 2001 census and compares them to the statistics found from the 1991 census.
