Referenda on the Council's constitution

Under the Local Government Act 2000, the Council must call a referendum on having a Directly Elected Mayor to run the Council, if it receives a petition from five per cent of the High Peak electorate calling for it.

The electorate of the Borough of High Peak is currently 68,783, so 3,440 electors would have to sign a petition, which is presented after 31 March 2007 and before 1 April 2008. This figure will be updated and publicised each year.
