The Mayor

The Civic Office

The Mayor is the first citizen and Civic Head of the Borough, and Chair of the Council.

The Mayor represents the borough on several Civic Functions each year, including the Mayor's Civic Reception, the Civic Service and the Remembrance Services. The Mayor is elected annually on a points system. This system ensures that Mayors are elected from all political parties on the Council. Through a committee that is not part of the council, the Mayor raises money for charity.

Any request for the Mayor to attend a function can be made to us in writing or online. The Mayor’s engagements are published here each month and copies are available by request from us.

The Mayor is currently Councillor David Lomax.

Mayoral Charity Money

There is a tradition of the Mayor in office raising money for charities. Originally there were three fund raising committees, operating in the Glossop, Central and Buxton areas. These committees comprised mainly non-Council members, serving for differing lengths of time. In recent years, it has not been possible to maintain the committees in Glossop and the Central area every year. The committee in Buxton raises and distributes money in the Buxton area.

There is an account set up by the Council, for receiving any charity money not raised by the charity committees. In past years this has included part of the collection from the Civic Service, part of the collection taken at Derby University in Buxton graduation ceremony, part of receipts at the Boxing Day concert, part of the raffle money at the Reception and general donations. The Mayor now determines how this money is distributed.

If you would like to apply for money from the Mayor’s Charity, please put your request in writing and address it to the Mayor’s Secretary, High Peak Borough Council, Town Hall, Buxton, Derbyshire SK17 6EL, or email julie.fawkes@highpeak.gov.uk. The Mayor will normally consider these requests towards the end of his / her Mayoral term of office, which is early May.

The figures have been prepared from information received from each Mayor. Detailed below is what each Mayor raised during his / her term of office:
