Sport England commissioned a national survey on physical activity to assess the amount of sport and active recreation undertaken by the population of England, for the first time, in 2005-2006.
This Active People Survey is the largest ever survey of sport and active recreation to be undertaken in Europe and provides, by far, the largest sample size ever established for a sport and recreation survey, allowing levels of detailed analysis previously unavailable. It identifies how participation varies from place to place and between different groups in the population.
Areas assessed included the amount of people doing physical activity at least 3 times a week; the amount of volunteering in sport, and number of people involved in local sports clubs. The results released in November 2006 were broken down into local authority areas and applied to adults over the age of 16.

Sport England is repeating the Active People Survey this year to assess if there has been any improvement in the levels of physical activity. The results of the current survey is due to be released in November 2008.
