Over 150 youngsters from schools across the borough took part in the 2005 Derbyshire Youth Games at Moorways Sport Complex in Derby last week, and there were some fantastic results for Team High Peak.
The High Peak squad, who took part in 16 events this year, came first in athletics, girls' primary football, netball and primary tag rugby. They were the runners-up in girls' rugby and boccia, and they came fourth in girls' cricket.
The greatest achievement for the team was winning the Fair Play Award. Each competing team and the officials were awarded fair play scores for each event entered. These scores were based on: participants trying their hardest, being a good sport, working as part of a team, playing to the spirit of the rules and showing respect for opponents and officials.
In a spectacular follow up to their cup-winning triumph at the Derbyshire Youth Games field events back in July, Team High Peak swam to victory in the pool competitions.
Over 50 participants and parents went to Moorways Stadium in Derby on 15 October to compete in the event and to support the team.
The High Peak swimmers achieved a great double-wammy by winning the Fair Play Award, which the borough's athletes also won at the summer games in July. The Fair Play Award is the most prestigious and hotly contested across Derbyshire. Participants are assessed on trying their hardest, being a good sport, working as part of a team, playing to the spirit of the rules and showing respect for opponents and officials.
Team High Peak won the gala for years 6 and 7 boys and girls, and years 8 to 12 boys and girls. They were presented with winning medals and certificates.
Four High Peak swimmers took part in an imaginative synchronised swimming demonstration. Melike Bozkurt, Lucy Carhart, Amy Griffith and Anna Montgomery undertook a six-week intensive training programme to produce a dynamic display to the Little Mermaid song, Kiss the Girl.
In the water polo event, the High Peak team just kept on winning! They battled their way to the final against Bolsover where they fought bravely against stiff opposition. Although Bolsover won 6-3, the High Peak team consisted of a number of youngsters who had never played before, so to reach the final was a magnificent achievement.
