To achieve this High Peak CSN has produced an action plan and has successfully bid for lottery funding from Sport England to fund the delivery of the High Peak Active Project to increase participation and volunteering rates in the area. The projects the High Peak CSN have helped develop include:
The High Peak Active Project aims to engage more families and people aged over 45 in sport and phsyical acitivty over the next three years. The CSN were successful in applying through Sport England’s Community Investment Fund for funding which when matched with partnership funding enabled the project to start in January 2008. The funding has been used to employ two dedicated activity co-ordinators to set up and deliver physical activity programmes across the High Peak.
The project has been very successful over the last 10 months with hundreds of young people taking part in sports activities at school alongside parents as part of the national Change 4 Life programme, and adults are being encouraged to take up physical activity as part of the Jog Derbyshire Programme. The project co-ordinators have also worked alongside the PCT Weight Management services to help people looking to improve there health through accessing physical activity opportunities.
The High Peak and Derbyshire Dales Leadership Academy is being supported through CSN funding to provide volunteering and leadership opportunities to young people aged 14 to 16. The academy is still in the development phase but aims to provide over 70 young people across the High Peak the chance to experience sports volunteering as part of a structured programme that includes rewards for high achievement. The project will also provide better access to coach education courses and help to develop potential sports coaches of the future.
The High Peak CSN has been the principle sponsor and organiser of the High Peak Sports Awards. The awards provide a mechanism for recognising the athletes, volunteers, coaches, teams and clubs in the High Peak. This year five High Peak winners have been shortlisted for the Derbyshire County Sports Awards and invited to attend a glitzy awards ceremony to be held in November at Pride Park Stadium in Derby. This is the highest number of nominations the High Peak has had represented at the county awards and shows the quality of sport in the area is increasing.
