High Peak Borough Council is responsible for trees on land which we own, such as parks and open spaces.
Trees on housing estates, including those in tenants' properties, are managed by High Peak Community Housing, in partnership with High Peak Borough Council. We also manage highway trees on behalf of Derbyshire County Council. Trees in school grounds are generally the responsibility of the school.
The council aims to retain trees for the benefit and enjoyment of our residents and visitors. Maintenance is undertaken to minimise risk to people or property, nuisance, and maintain the health of trees. Priority is given to maintenace required for safety reasons.
Some trees in private ownership are protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) and written consent is required before any work can be undertaken to these trees. The council also needs to be notified, in writing, before works are undertaken to trees in Conservation Areas.
Some of the parks have individual arboricultural management plans, which guides the management of trees and woodlands, these are available to download.
The council has a Tree Strategy which guides how the council manages the trees under its control and provides guidance for tree owners. The strategy is divided in to three parts. The Tree Policy, which sets out the guiding principals, The Action Plan which outlines how the council will implement the policies. The final part of the strategy is the good practice guides which give more practical information on topics including tree work, tree management, trees on development sites and tree Risk Management. These documents are available for you to download.
If you can't find an answer to your query on these web pages and you want to report an issue relating to trees please fill in the online enquiry form. This will be sent to the Arboricultural Officer, who may need to inspect the tree before responding.
