Notice of Kerb Removal Work

Please read the following information carefully

Notice is hereby given that, as part of the memorial safety scheme, High Peak Borough Council will be carrying out kerb removal work within the following cemeteries:

Since 1980 all Council cemeteries have been ‘lawn’ cemeteries. This means that all graves should be lawned, and that no kerbs, edgings, gravel and grave gardens have been authorised during this time. If any of these items have been placed on graves since 1980 they have therefore been placed without permission and in contradiction of regulations.

If you are a grave owner you have a duty of care to abide by the cemetery regulations and ensure that the grave can be maintained safely.

Therefore, if there are unauthorised kerbs, edgings, gravel and grave gardens on graves a notice will be placed on the grave for three months, stating that the kerbs will be removed and lawned with topsoil and seed in due course. You should not attempt to disturb the reinstatement once it has taken place.

If there are authorised but unmaintained kerbs or edgings on the grave, we will place a notice on the grave for three months. If a notice is placed on a grave that you are responsible for, you should contact us immediately and, if necessary, arrange for professional repairs to be carried out by a memorial stonemason to NAMM standards as soon as possible.

If no correspondence is forthcoming during the notice period, we will remove the unmaintained kerbs and lawn the grave using topsoil and seed. You should not attempt to disturb the reinstatement once it has taken place.

We will also place notices in the local press informing grave / memorial owners of any work to be carried out.

We will accept no responsibility if work is carried out to a grave that is not to the liking of the grave owner, as the grave remains the property of the Council and ample warning has been given of impending work.

If you are aware that your grave requires work you should contact us immediately on 0845 129 77 77 or 01298 28400, as we are unlikely to have your present contact details.

Please be aware that we are committed to providing an excellent cemetery service and that this work is necessary to ensure the safety of all visitors to our cemeteries.
