Energy and Climate Change

Climate Change Challenge

Climate change is the most critical challenge facing everyone today, but the little things we do can make a big difference, and together we can tackle it.

Join the climate change campaign now – and pick up practical tips and advice (External website**)

Everybody's talking about climate change is a joint effort between all 19 local authorities in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, and is funded by Defra. Since its launch in March 2007, nearly 5,000 people (2,958 residents from Derbyshire) have pledged to take practical steps to help tackle climate change, and reduce their household's carbon dioxide emissions – and have reduced their household carbon footprint by up to an amazing 25%. A mobile exhibition unit, running partly on bio-diesel fuel, and featuring carbon reducing photo-voltaic cells and a wind generator, has been touring the region, answering residents' questions, giving practical advice on energy saving measures and supplying low energy light bulbs.

Action packs for schools and communities are now available to download here (external website**).

Carbon Footprint

The average British household emits 10.22 tonnes of carbon dioxide gas each year. You can help reduce your household's carbon footprint by one-fifth.
Use this Carbon Calculator (external website**) to reliably calculate the size of your carbon footprint from the energy you use at home and when you travel, and see how this compares to the national average. The carbon calculator enables you to work out your carbon footprint, either as an individual or as a household, using government recognised data and calculations.

Act on CO2 Calculator

It’s a great tool for deciding just how much you can realistically do to help tackle climate change as it can produce a personalised action plan to help you reduce your own carbon footprint. Using this new Defra calculator will help you develop and refine what you are doing, so that it fits your needs and your lifestyle while helping you tackle climate change. Every person's efforts matter – just making a few simple changes can help to tackle climate change and save our planet.

Recent research, commissioned by Defra, has shown that 94% of people in Britain now believe the world’s climate is changing and 57% believe we are already feeling the impacts of climate change. The research shows 66% of people surveyed were already taking personal action to try to limit climate change.
