We aimed to reduce the Council’s use of gas and electricity from our 12 main buildings* by 2% by 2006-2007 compared with the previous year. In 2005-2006 gas consumption was 7,610,713 KWh and electricity consumption was 2,350,226 KWh. In 2006 – 2007, gas consumption was 6656059 KWh and electricity was 2563274 KWh. This represents a reduction of 7.5% or a carbon dioxide reduction of 3.5% compared to the previous year.
The council has used an ‘invest to save’ fund to install a pool cover at Buxton Swimming Pool, upgrade lighting at New Mills Leisure Centre and improve the heating controls at Glossop Swimming Pool. We haven’t managed to roll out a complete programme of powering down PC’s when not in use but we do encourage staff to do this when possible.
High Peak Borough Council has signed up to the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change following a decision made by the Executive. This commits signatories to prepare a plan to address the causes and effects of climate change and secure maximum benefits for their communities. We are supporting a Derbyshire County Council initiative to develop a countywide partnership approach to address this issue.
* These buildings account for more than 90% of total gas and electricity used by the council
