Firework and Bonfire Safety

High Peak Borough Council is part of a Derbyshire wide initiative to promote safety at firework displays and bonfires. You are encouraged to register your event and receive written guidance and advice from the Council and the local Fire Brigade. If your arrangements are considered suitable, you will be awarded a registration disc for use in advertising your event. The disc shows that organisers have consulted with the local authority to minimise the risk of accidents at their event.

We can also arrange promotional visits to schools to increase children's awareness of firework risks. Trading Standards at Derbyshire County Council advise on legislation regarding sale of fireworks and issue licences in respect of sales.

The DTi issue free printed guidance on running a bonfire/firework party. We can send you a copy of this guidance with our bonfire registration pack. You can contact the Dept of Trade and Industry by telephoning 0870 150 2500 or via their website (External website**).

Training is offered to event organisers prior to Bonfire Night each year. Details are in our registration pack. The Derbyshire Fire Service also offer different levels of fire training throughout the year, details are available on their website (External website**) or by telephoning 01332 771221. You may also e mail them at enquiries@dfrs.org.uk.

Registration for private events is not compulsory but there is a useful checklist concerning safety precautions within the pack which you might find helpful. The Fire Brigade will also be happy to advise you about your event.

The aim of the registration scheme is to provide free advice to event organisers in order that safety arrangements can be checked prior to a registration disc being issued. The disc may then be used on advertising material, to indicate to the general public that you have sought professional advice for a safe and well run event. If approved, we will also enter your event into the "Whats On" guide on our website.

If you wish to complain about antisocial behaviour eg letting fireworks off in the street, please contact your local police.

If you want to store fireworks on your premises please contact the Trading Standards Unit (External website**) at Derbyshire County Council. They are responsible for the issue of licences. They can be contacted by writing to Trading Standards Division, Chatsworth Hall, Chesterfield Road, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 3FW Tel: 01629 585858.
