Food Waste Recycling in High Peak

Your new food waste collection service

We and the County Council are making changes to the way your food waste is collected so that you can recycle more and we can process it in a cost effective and more environmentally friendly way.

Recycling collection

All residents with green-lidded wheelie bins can include food waste with their garden waste.

All you need to do is put peelings and food waste from your plate into your existing green-lidded wheelie bin, and put it out for collection as normal.

Why are we making changes?

Many residents have been asking us when they’ll be able to recycle food waste. That time is now here. Your actions will help to cut down the amount of food waste that ends up in landfill sites. Rotting food in landfill produces methane, which contributes to climate change. As the cost of sending food waste to landfill is increasing, you will help the Council and its residents save money too.

Compost

What happens to your food waste?

The contents of the green-lidded bin are taken to a special processing plant in Buxton where it is recycled into compost which is used for soil improvement and landscaping.

What food waste can I recycle?

As well as garden waste you can recycle all your food waste in the green-lidded bin, including:

  • Meat and fish – raw and cooked including bones
  • Fruit and vegetables – raw and cooked
  • All dairy products such as eggs and cheese
  • Bread, cake and pastries
  • Rice, pasta and beans
  • Uneaten food from your plates and dishes
  • Tea bags and coffee grounds

Please do not put any of these materials in your green lidded bin:

  • Plastic bags
  • Plastic packaging
  • Liquids
  • Oil or liquid fat
  • General household waste
  • Nappies
  • Duvets

What happens if I put the wrong materials into my green lidded bin?

It is important that only compostable waste, such as garden waste and food waste, is placed in the green lidded bins. This is because the waste is taken to a specialist composting facility and, if non-compostable items are included, the entire load then has to be hand sorted, which costs the taxpayer a considerable amount of time and money. Furthermore additional costs to the council are incurred as we have to undertake return visits to properties to empty the green lidded bin once the incorrect items have been removed.

If you have placed incorrect items into your green lidded bin you will have received a red sticker on the lid advising you of this and the bin will not have been collected. Please remove the incorrect items and place them into your black bin. We will then return to undertake a collection within five working days.”

You can look here for a full list of what can and cannot be put in the green-lidded bin and other containers.

How do I recycle my food waste?

As with your garden waste, food waste cannot be contained in plastic, because plastic will not break down into compost. Food waste either needs to be placed loosely into the green-lidded bin or wrapped in a sheet of newspaper.

Please do not use biodegradeable shopping bags, as these will not be suitable for our processing plant. Any unacceptable material found in the green-lidded bin may result in the bin not being emptied.

Kitchen caddies make recycling food waste easier!

To help residents recycle their food waste you can purchase 7 litre containers with lockable lids. These can be used to store food waste in your kitchen, before transferring it to the green-lidded bin.

The caddies are not available from High Peak Borough Council but can be purchased from local shops and supermarkets (from as little as £2), and on the internet, for example from www.derbyshire.getcomposting.com (External website**). Alternatively, you can use any plastic or cardboard box to transfer your food waste to your green-lidded bin.

Lining your kitchen caddy

If you wish to line your kitchen caddy, you may do so with a sheet of newspaper, or with High Peak Borough Council's approved paper liners. Ten litre liners are required for the seven litre caddy, and 25 litre liners are required for the 23 litre outdoor caddy for residents on bag collections (see below).

What if I have bags collected instead of a green lidded bin?

If you currently have your garden waste collected in clear plastic bags instead of a green-lidded bin, you can also recycle food waste. All households should have been issued with heavy duty paper sacks.

If you wish, you can use a larger 23 litre caddy to keep your food waste in prior to collection. Households must then tip the food waste into their paper sacks ready for collection. These larger caddies are available for free from High Peak Borough Council, contact us to arrange delivery.
