Gritting and Grit Bins

Derbyshire County Council is responsible for the winter maintenance and gritting (External website**) of public roads and public footpaths in the county. Certain roads will be treated throughout the winter, whenever the temperature is forecast to drop below freezing. Snow clearance will be carried out promptly.

There are "self help" grit bins, or salt heaps, located at various points throughout the Borough. Most of these are the responsibility of Derbyshire County Council. We will install and maintain grit bins in the Borough Council car parks and within sheltered housing schemes. The supply of highway and footpath grit bins is the responsibility of the County Council Highways Department.

Enquiries and complaints regarding grit bins will be dealt with by the Borough Council, if owned by us, or passed to the appropriate authority, if not owned by the Borough Council.

We grit some public footpaths in the town centres, on behalf of the County Council, if snow has fallen. They are gritted in order of priority. See below:

NB: All other public footpaths are the responsibility of Derbyshire County Council.

Some car parks are gritted at our discretion, depending on weather conditions:
