Gritting and Grit Bins

Some useful information is provided on the Derbyshire County Council website. (external website**)

Priority is being given to the main gritting routes which include main A-roads, most B-roads, most bus routes and some other roads which have specific difficulties.

In bad weather conditions gritting teams will try to treat as many minor roads as possible once the main routes have been salted.

What we do at High Peak

Derbyshire County Council are responsible for gritting all footpaths. For more details on the gritting of 'priority footpaths' in the High Peak, please click here. Some car parks are gritted at our discretion, depending on weather conditions, click here for more information.

What you can do

There are "self help" grit bins, or salt heaps, located at various points throughout the Borough. Most of these are the responsibility of Derbyshire County Council. We will install and maintain grit bins in the Borough Council car parks and within sheltered housing schemes. The supply of highway and footpath grit bins is the responsibility of the County Council Highways Department.

We would urge households to buy your own supply of grit, where possible for your own personal use, e.g. to treat private drives and in case nearby grit bins can’t be replenished. Remember: grit bins are there for communal use in clearing public footpaths and roads NOT for personal domestic use.

Enquiries and complaints regarding grit bins will be dealt with by the Borough Council, if owned by us, or passed to the appropriate authority, if not owned by the Borough Council.

Derbyshire County Council do not have the resources to provide new grit bins at present.
