The Council runs a number of traditional market stalls ourself. Periodically, Farmers' Markets and specialist markets are also held.
We want our markets to be thriving places of business that appeal to residents and attract visitors to High Peak. We work with market operators and traders to ensure a wide and varied range of products are on offer at our town markets, and are developing farmers' and specialist markets in response to demand from the public.
We expect market traders to be courteous and fair in their dealings with the public. We will only allow market traders to operate if they hold adequate public liability insurance. We also expect them to remain within the area allocated to them, and not to impede access to shops or safe use of roads and pavements. Markets can generate waste, and we expect this to be cleared up at the end of each market day, and for the market site to be left clean and tidy.
Markets are held in some High Peak market towns, every week, such as:
Market stall hours are usually from 6.30am to 5pm, but may vary with the weather.
Outdoor stall rents vary at each market. The minimum charge is £10 per day at Glossop. At Glossop indoor market, rents are dependent on size of stall. Fixed outdoor market stalls are only provided at Glossop.
We encourage people to try operating a stall on a casual trader basis, to see if it is suitable for you. Please email customer-services@highpeak.gov.uk or phone 0845 129 77 77 or 01298 28400 to apply.
Anyone interested in starting up a business as a market trader may be eligible for free business support and a discount on market stall fees. The Derbyshire Market Trader Programme offers Business Link Support and Training and discounts of 50% on all tradtional outdoor retail market stall fees for up to six months (Subject to application and acceptance). For more information please email customer-services@highpeak.gov.uk or phone 0845 129 77 or 01298 28400.
If you have a complaint about a market, contact our Customer Service centres on 0845 129 77 77 or 01298 28400.
Farmers' Markets provide an opportunity to buy food and local produce directly from local farmers and producers, who are normally within 30 miles of the venue. Many stalls are registered organic producers, and there can be no genetically modified organisms knowingly sold. Stallholders are usually family members, pleased to answer questions about their products. View the Farmers' Market calendar

This is another monthly opportunity to buy a huge variety of food directly from local farmers and producers, and specialty food and drink from around the world – including an excellent organic range of meat, vegetables, cakes, biscuits, eggs, jam, relishes, chocolate, tea, beers, wines and cheese. These are organised usually on second Saturdays, 10am–4pm, by the Pavilion Gardens (external website**), inside the Octagon hall. Call 01298 23114.
Charities and not-for-profit organisations can hire allocated stalls at Buxton Saturday market and Glossop Indoor Market for a nominal fee to help raise funds. They can apply for stall space at our other outdoor markets, but must supply their own stalls. Please email us at customer-services@highpeak.gov.uk or phone 0845 129 77 77 or 01298 28400, for further details.
To qualify for a charity market stall, you must be a registered charity or a not-for-profit organisation. You cannot sell raffle tickets unless you are registered under the Lotteries and Amusement Act.
A car boot sale is a market and, in many instances, permission is required, even if it is held on private land. So, if you wish to organise a car boot sale, please email us, or phone 0845 129 77 77 or 01298 28400, first.
