Pest Control Advice

Bats

Bats (15KB) PDF document are a protected species and should not be exterminated. English Nature (External website**) deals with bats and will be able to give you advice - Phone 01629 815095.

Bees

Bumble bees (25KB) PDF document are usually harmless if they are left alone and the bee keepers are not interested in them unless they are swarming.

We may be able to treat...

If bees are swarming in the house and you consider them to be extremely dangerous, the Council will contact the bee keeper below and see if he can attend. If he cannot, one of our pest control officers will try to deal with this, even if they are currently on another visit. Examples of dangerous bees might be if they have come down the chimney and are swarming in the house or are preventing someone getting out of the house because they are blocking the doorway. There needs to be some discretion used here, as killing bees is a last resort.

If someone in your household suffers from Anaphalactic Shock, then tell the Council and we will act immediately.

The following bee keepers are in the High Peak for advice or to take away honey bees:

Mr M Dennison - call 01298 83526 or 07790 350912 - is willing to travel to Buxton, Hope Valley, Whaley Bridge and New Mills (10 Mile Radius). His charge is approximately £45, but the caller will have to discuss this with Mr Dennison.

Mr D Lomas - call 01663 719217 or 07813 125 757 - is willing to cover the Buxton to New Mills areas, but nothing past Buxton, Hope Valley or Glossopdale. He does not charge and will only collect. He will not exterminate and will refer back to us, if necessary.

Colorado Beetle

This a notifiable pest - it is not native and not established in the UK. It is prohibited in the UK and all sightings must be reported. The Colorado beetle (29KB) PDF document may arrive in this country by 'hitchhiking' in plant produce from overseas, such as potatoes or salads and fresh produce.

What does it look like?

The adult beetle is very distinctive. It is about 10mm long and has 10 alternate black and yellow stripes running down its back. It looks like an overgrown ladybird in shape. Immature Colorado beetles or larvae are 3mm-10mm long, with black heads and deep orange/brown to pinkish red bodies. They are freely mobile and feed on potato or other solanaceous (potato family) weeds.

Where to report findings of Colorado beetle

All sightings and findings must be reported as quickly as possible to the local DEFRA Plant Health and Seeds Inspector, at:

Plant Health Division
Room 336 Foss House
Kings Pool, 1-2 Peasholme Green
York YO1 7PX
Tel: 01904 455189
Fax: 01904 455199

Information they will require

You may be asked to send the beetle(s) in a padded envelope by post, together with confirmation of the details above, and with any accompanying packaging to:

The Central Science Laboratory,
Sand Hutton,
York
YO41 1LZ.

Fleas

Before a flea (29KB) PDF document treatment you must hoover up thoroughly in the room where the fleas are found, including the furniture. Then the bag from the vaccuum cleaner must be thrown away into a bin outside the house - bagless hoovers must be washed out. If you have a pet, buy a flea collar and/or flea powder for it. All pets should be treated at the same time as the property treatment. Once the environmental health officer has been, it is advisable not to do any more hoovering for roughly a week. Officers may use smoke bombs - if this happens, you will have to leave the house (pets included) for three hours afterwards. Fish and animals in water must be covered well, as the pesticides are water soluble and will affect them.

Moles

A professional molecatcher is Mr Phil Johnson - 01663 751652 from Chinley. He will be happy to help with your mole problem. (15KB) PDF document

Other Pests

For any other pests, you can consult the Yellow Pages, under 'Pest Control' for a private contractor.

Please do not treat the pest yourself, as both the pesticides and the pest might be harmful.
