
Radon is a naturally-occuring radio-active gas which is formed in the ground. It is colourless and odourless. It seeps to the surface and can build up inside properties.
Health studies have linked radon with lung cancer.
Testing involves having two small detectors (which are sent out and returned by post) in the house for three months. Most tests are carried out by the Health Protection Agency Radon Measurement Service. (External website**)
The cost is £43.70. If you are a High Peak Community Housing tenant, they will pay for the test.
What you need to do depends on the type of floor you have and how high the radon level is. Costs for most houses will vary from about £200-£1,000. If it is a High Peak Community Housing property, they will pay for the work.
Premises with poorly ventilated areas are more likely to have radon problems. The only way to be sure is to have a test. Detectors cost from £15-£20 each. Environmental Health can give advice about the need for testing.
In the workplace, if radon concentrations exceed certain levels, you will need to take action to reduce the amount of radon. The cost of this will depend on the radon level and the construction of the building. Environmental Health can give advice on whether work is needed.

The detectors are usually left in place for three months.
All employers in certain areas of the borough are required to assess the risk from radon and other hazards. We can investigate this for you.
The following organisations are known to carry out radon control work, and are presently approved by the Radon Council. However, the Radon Council have not "certified" or "endorsed" their work in any way. Inclusion does not imply approval by High Peak Borough Council and exclusion does not indicate the opposite.
