Refuse Collection

We are responsible for arranging the collection and disposal of household and business waste. Most residents have wheeled bins to store their refuse. A few are required to store waste in plastic sacks where wheeled bins are not appropriate.

Disposal of household waste

All residents in the High Peak have a weekly collection from their homes, the majority of which are on the Binnovation scheme (an alternate weekly collection of black and green-lidded bins). The collection normally takes place on the same day of each week, but the schedule will be disrupted at the Christmas/New Year holiday period. Residents are asked to refer to their collection calendars. Revised collection schedules are normally publicised in the Buxton Advertiser, Glossop Reporter group, on this website, and by placing stickers on wheeled bins.

Residents with wheeled bins are asked to leave their bin at the edge of their property next to the highway the night before the collection is due. They will be emptied provided that they are not over-filled or over heavy. We will then leave the bin at the edge of the property. Where wheeled bins are not appropriate due to location, then local arrangements are made for collection of bags.

Find out when your recycling will be collected

Your bin will be emptied within 5 working days, and you will need to contact Customer Services to arrange this. You can help us though by ensuring that your bin is set out at its normal place for emptying on the day before the collection.

Recycling bins and containers remain the property of the Council and must be left with the property when you move house.

If you have moved into a newly built property you must purchase your own bin. Until delivered the waste should be placed in black sacks. You can purchase your bin from us at a cost of £20 (including VAT and delivery).

Broken bins can only be replaced free of charge if the damage has occurred during the emptying process by the refuse crew.

Refuse Disposal Sites

Derbyshire County Council provides a household waste recycling centre at Melandra Transfer Station, Brookfield, Glossop (external website**).

The site accepts most types of Household Waste including: excess bin waste, furniture, electrical appliances, fridges and freezers, green garden waste, carpets, paper, cardboard, glass containers, items from vehicle maintenance, oil, and small DIY jobs.

Hardcore and soil is only accepted in small bagged up quantities of not more than 50kg (two sacks maximum), one visit per week.

Derbyshire County Council is constructing a new household waste recycling centre at Waterswallows in Buxton. This is due to be operational in February 2009.

Clinical Waste

We offer a domestic service to collect and dispose of clinical waste including needles from households only.

No medicines whatsoever should be placed in the yellow bags or sharps containers. Medicines should be disposed of at the local chemist.

What constitutes clinical waste?

Clinical waste collections from households are free. We do not currently offer any Commercial collections.

Regular collection of domestic clinical waste will be included on a round, as soon as possible after receipt of the completed referral document. Collections are every Monday.

We provide a trade waste collection service for local businesses, collecting the waste from commercial and business properties. Several different size containers are available to suit the amount of waste generated. These waste containers range in size from a 120 litre wheeled bin to a 1,100 litre container.

The collection service is usually weekly, for which there is an annual charge. We also provide compactor skips and carry out a one-off collection, if required.

If it is classified as Special Waste, the Council is not licensed to deal with it, as it is hazardous and difficult to handle. Examples of special waste are asbestos, acids, oils, paint, car batteries, solvents, etc. The customer should contact a commercial waste collection company certified to collect special waste.

Netregs, which is part of the Environment Agency, has set up a Waste Directory (external website**), to help small businesses locate their nearest location to recycle a wide variety of different wastes. You can view the Waste Directory (external website**) on netregs.wastedirectory.org.uk (external website**).

Bulky Waste collections

We operate a service for the removal of bulky crushable household items, such as furniture and old appliances, at a minimum cost of £10. We do not undertake house clearances, nor collect garden waste, trees, rubble, builders or DIY waste, including doors, both internal and external, sheds or greenhouses. We are unable to collect glass panels larger than 3ft square.

Fridges & freezers

We provide a separate collection service for fridges, dehumidifiers and freezers from domestic households at £10 per item. Alternatively items can be taken to the Civic Amenity site. Both fridges collected and those taken to the civic amenity site are recycled.

We will also collect domestic size fridges and freezers from businesses, however there is a charge of £35 per item for this service.

An external contractor will collect large commercial fridges and freezers and will charge the customer direct for this service.

For information on the above collection services contact Customer Services on 0845 129 77 77 or 01298 28400.

Service Charges

If the customer can provide evidence of receipt of Housing/Council Tax benefit (e.g. quote benefit reference number) the charge for bulky collections will be reduced by 50%.

Payment needs to made at the time of booking for bulky collections.

For more than 10 items, or where large/awkward items are involved, a separate assessment will be needed and the charge worked out. The customer can then decide if they wish to proceed.
