Private Water Supplies and Sampling

Environmental health provides a service to test all properties that have a private water supply. A private water supply is any drinking water, which is not provided by a water company. It is not a "mains" supply. High Peak has in excess of 1000 properties whose only source of drinking water is from a private supply; falling into one of four main types, Wells, Springs, Streams and Boreholes.

Water, which percolates through the ground often becomes contaminated with micro-organisms like E.coli and can absorb minerals, typically iron and manganese. The contamination might make you seriously ill or give the water an unpleasant taste, and cause problems with staining of laundry or baths. We can provide analysis and offer advice on treatment for your supply.

REMEMBER - Safe drinking water is essential to good health. All private water supplies can pose a threat to health unless they are properly monitored, protected and treated.

Buxton Natural Mineral Water

Information on the source, quality and supply at St Ann's Well can be obtained by contacting the Environmental Health Team by email to customer-services@highpeak.gov.uk or phone 0845 129 7777 or 01298 28400.

Water Supplies

The Council can advise on drinking water standards, and will check private and public supplies to ensure the water is safe for human consumption.

Drainage Problems

If you are experiencing drainage problems on a privately owned property, built after 1937, this could be caused by a private sewer. It is therefore the joint and equal responsibility of the owner and occupiers to resolve. The Environmental Health Team can investigate and give advice – email customer-services@highpeak.gov.uk or phone 0845 129 7777 or 01298 28400.

Your water utility company is responsible for clearing blocked public sewers.

Culverts

Please report problems of blockage or debris in culverts, gullies and grids to the Council's Customer Services team, email customer-services@highpeak.gov.uk or call 0845 129 7777 or 01298 28400.

Road Gullies

High Peak Borough Council are responsible for the scheduled cleaning of highway gullies. This would usually include an annual cleanse, although in problem areas the frequency is increased.

Please call Customer Services on 0845 129 77 77 or 01298 28400 to report a blocked gully.
