Private Sector Housing

The Environmental Health Service is the enforcement agency for housing standards in the private sector, which includes owner/occupied properties, as well as privately rented accommodation. In addition, officers work in partnership with landlords and external agencies to encourage provision of additional affordable rented accommodation, and improve living conditions in existing rented accommodation. A more detailed description of the Council’s activities in Private Sector Housing Renewal can be found in the latest Private Sector Housing Renewal Policy (225KB) PDF document

Private Sector Housing Stock Condition Survey 2009

The council have appointed Michael Dyson Associates to carry out a condition survey of a selection of private sector dwellings. We have a statutory duty to periodically assess the housing stock in the borough so we can ensure our housing policy is up to date and assistance can be targeted in the right areas.

Randomly selected private households will receive a letter from Michael Dyson inviting residents to arrange a free inspection of their property. Once all the properties have been inspected the results will be combined to give an overall picture of private housing in High Peak.

There is no sales element to the inspection and the information is for the sole use of the Council in determining whether its housing policy is correct.

There is no obligation to take part in the survey. The surveyors who visit will all have identification and authorisation from the council. If a customer is in doubt about the identity of the surveyor they can ring the council.

If a customer receives a letter from Michael Dyson and is agreeable to an inspection of their property they should contact the contractor directly to make an appointment.
