Private Sector Housing
Housing Disrepair
The Council has significant legal powers to require the owners of private property to properly maintain their dwellings. The main powers are:
- To require owners of property to remedy substantial disrepair, and the closure of properties that are unsuitable for human habitation.
- To require owners of empty properties to bring their property back into use as living accommodation.
- To require landlords to carry out repairs to privately rented property, where the conditions cause problems to occupying tenants.
If you live in rented accommodation, and you think that the property is not in good repair, you can contact us for advice and assistance. Please email customer-services@highpeak.gov.uk or call 0845 129 7777 or 01298 28400.
