Health promotion

We are committed to supporting the promotion of healthy lifestyles through our partnership work with both Derbyshire County NHS Trust and Tameside and Glossop NHS Trust. We work on initiatives to promote physical activity across the borough linked to leisure centres and other activity programmes delivered by partners.

The Derbyshire Leisure HUB programme

We work in partnership with Derbyshire County NHS Trust are responsible for the delivery of the Leisure HUB programme across the High Peak.  We commission 3 leisure providers in the district to engage people in physical activity through making leisure centres the HUB for improving health. The HUB sites within the district are Chapel Leisure Centre, New Mills Leisure Centre, and New Bodies Gym in Buxton. Each facility offers an exercise and weight management programme designed to support people to achieve a healthy lifestyle by increasing physical activity levels and improving your nutrition choices.

The programme can help you:

  • Lose weight
  • Reduce health risks
  • Manage your health condition
  • Improve mobility
  • Eat a healthy balanced diet
  • Have more energy
  • Sleep well
  • Feel more confident
  • Meet new people

The activities on offer can be accessed during the day or evening time and the programme is overseen by fully qualified and motivated staff. The choice of activities varies at different centres but includes:

  • A 12-week weight management programme
  • Gym sessions
  • Class based activities including yoga, Pilates, aqua fit, and low intensity circuits
  • Swimming
  • Walking groups

We also work in partnership with Derbyshire Waist Wise service to provide 10 week programmes of food nutrition education and support.

The programme is for anyone aged 16+ who has a health condition and currently does little or no exercise. It is also available to those needing support with weight management.

After completing the programme the staff in the HUB sites will support you to maintain your exercise this includes offering reduced rate membership packages and signposting to other activities in the community. If this sounds like a programme you could benefit from them please contact your GP or practice nurse to discuss. This is a referral based programme therefore you have to undertake a baseline assessment with your GP or practice nurse to assess if the programme is right for you they can then complete the referral form and an appointment can be made with your local HUB site.

Walking for Health

We also run a successful Walking for Health Programme supported through a network of volunteer walk leaders. Walks run every week in different areas of the borough and range from easy beginners walks through to medium length walks for those wanting to spend more then two hours walking in the pleasant surroundings of the High Peak countryside. We also work with partners including the Peak District National Park Authority to support walking festivals and additional walks for those that progress beyond our Walking for Health programme. Please see the leaflet below.
