Fun-packed summer for High Peak youngsters

Submitted: 9th July 2012

FROM crafts and canoeing to soccer and squash, there will be something for all tastes this summer as High Peak’s leisure venues push the boat out for holiday-making youngsters.

The Borough Council has joined forces with DC Leisure to serve up a six-week feast of family fun running from Monday, July 23 to Friday, August 31.

Highlights of the summer spectacular include free sports sessions at Glossop and New Mills Leisure Centres for children aged eight to 16. The deal means that young people can play badminton, squash, short tennis, table tennis, football and basketball on any available, unbooked court for up to two hours. What is more, all equipment is provided.

Water babes will be well catered for at the New Mills venue with aquatic antics ranging from snorkelling to water basketball and volleyball. Meanwhile, pleasure seekers preferring to keep their feet dry will be able to cavort on a bouncy castle, defy gravity with a gymnastics crash course or have a go at cheerleading.

Not to be outdone, Glossop Swimming Pool is to make a splash with giant inflatable fun plus aqua scooters and water-based aerobics while the town’s leisure centre has lined up sessions including junior fitness conditioning, dodge ball and an up-and-away climbing club. The leisure centre is also to host summer crafts workshops, a special sports day and a zany animal Olympics.

There will be no excuse for Buxton youngsters getting bored either, with the Swimming and Fitness Centre set to host activities including aqua circuits, family fun sessions in the big pool, and parent and toddler time in the smaller pool.

To make the summer celebrations as affordable as possible, Glossop Leisure Centre is offering a six-week pass costing just £50 per child or £90 for two siblings. The pass entitles the holder to attend the majority of sessions at no further charge for the entire school holidays.

Anthony McKeown, executive councillor for community services, said: “While everyone looks forward to the summer holidays, we all know that keeping the kids entertained can become a challenge after the first few days.

“That’s why we’ve joined forces with DC Leisure to serve up a feast of fun that will keep families happy and fighting fit for days on end”.
