The Gamesley and Glossop District Health Group is part of a network of groups for people with heart problems, supported by the British Heart Foundation.
The groups, which are run by their members, also offer support to partners, carers and the family of people who suffer heart problems.
Health support groups are self-help groups that compliment the services offered by health professionals, and offer support and advice from people who have experienced similar problems.
The group aims to support its members by maintaining contact and offering support to people with heart problems, and to their partners, relatives and other carers. The group aims to provide emotional support for patients and partners.
The group meets once per month, normally at Gamesley Community Centre. The meetings are mixed – with information available on local groups and services which may be of help to members.
We have visitors to the meetings who speak on a range of subjects, including local health services, diet and lifestyle advice. Speakers have included the Patient and Liason Service (PALS) and a Cardiac Nurse from Tameside Coronary Care Unit.
The group has also organised outings, which have included a day out on a canal barge along the Peak Canal.
These are fun, flexible courses, designed to increase awareness of living a healthier lifestyle and are run over six weeks, by Tameside and Glossop Primary Care Trust.
Each session is approximately 1½ hours and includes a health topic, activity session and relaxation. Topics include healthy eating, the benefits of exercise, food labelling and managing stress.
You will be given practical skills and information to enable you to engage in a healthier lifestyle. Courses are appropriate for all ages and abilities and are run at various times.
If you would like further information on the next lifesyle course, please contact Lisa Jowitt, phone 01457 869145.
We offer a drop-in session every Thursday, 3pm – 5pm, and 7.15pm – 8pm, at Gamesley Community Centre. This session is provided FREE by the Tameside and Glossop Stop Smoking Service.
