Squash
About the Leagues
The squash courts at Glossop Leisure Centre have attracted a wide variety of players over the years, from those looking for a means of recreation to highly competitive challenges. The staff have seen new players adapt to the game whilst developing and progressing their abilities.
The Leisure Centre runs a junior squash club for children between 6-16 who work towards achieving the unsquashable skills awards. When they become of a certain standard they can also enter the squash league.
At present the league consists of over 16 mini leagues all of which have six players competing to be the best player at the centre. The players in the leagues also have the opportunity to partake in games for the squash club. The men run five teams and play on a Thursday, whilst the ladies have three teams, who play on a Monday. These games take place all over the Northwest and players are chosen based on their performances in the leagues.
League Rules
Each league is made up of 5 people who have 5 weeks to play each other. At the end of 5 weeks a member of staff will add up all the points and calculate how the leagues will be changed.
- All games must be played with a double yellow spot ball unless both players agree.
- All matches to be played to the best of 5 games.
- Before you begin, decide with your partner what you should do if you don't finish the game. Play again or let the result stand.
- Each player is awarded 1 point for turning up and 1 point for each game won e.g. Tom beats Fred by 3 games to 1. Tom gets 4 points and
Fred gets 2. These points are to be put in to the box on the ladder.
- All games must be completed by the dates on the board.
- Each player is responsible for organising their own games.
- If any player does not play for 2 league periods then they will be dropped from the leagues (Unless injured!)
- In the event of any disagreement, the organiser's word is final.
- In the event of a player being unreasonably late (10 mins) then the game will be forfeit.
- If a player is unable to continue a match due to injury then:-
- If you have completed 1 game then the match is nullified.
- If you have completed more than one game then the result will stand.
- If a player offers 3 separate fixtures for a game to an opponent and they are all declined then the former may claim 3 points to 0.
- We reserve the right to extend league periods without notice.
- If a player only manages to play one game, either due to other commitments OR,
Because of injury, then their results do not count and points against them are deducted from the opponent claiming points.
REMEMBER
If a court is cancelled or not attended then unless it is relet, you may have to pay a cancellation fee.
Code of Conduct
Although games are competitive, they should be sporting and friendly. You are responsible for arranging games with another player. This works both ways.
- All league games must be played at the Centre.
- You should agree that your game is a league game before you start.
- Any deliberate mis-recording of match scores may result in disqualification from the leagues (subject to inquiry by the Disciplinary & Disputes Committee)
- The leagues are run by the centre for the benefit of all players. If in doubt, ask a member of staff or refer to the league rules. Any dispute should be brought to the attention of the Duty Officer. If you are not satisfied then you can ask for arbitration from the Disciplinary & Disputes committee.
As a general reminder, be punctual, be fair and be competitive.
- If, when the leagues are changed and two players in a league have the same number of points then the points against each player will be compared to decide movement.
If this is not available then the result of the game where they played each other will be used.
- If this is not available then a coin toss will decide.
There may be occasions where a whole division does not play a game. This will be dealt with as fairly as possible.
- In order to maintain the courts please ensure that your squash shoes have gum rubber soles.
