Rates of obesity in young people are rising – according to research young people consume less calories now than they did 50 years ago. The difference is in the levels of activity. Government guidelines recommend one hour of moderate activity for children each day. At least twice a week this should include activities to improve bone health, muscle strength and flexibility. However, less than 20% of children actually achieve this, a figure that reduces as children grow older.

We are offering supervised gym based exercise sessions for 11-13 years and 14-15 years. Sessions include cardiovascular exercise, balance and co-ordination, along with reaction and speed work, agility and strength training. In addition, heart rate monitors will be used to ensure that children are exercising within their limits. Gym based cardiovascular machines, such as treadmills and bikes, as well as resistance equipment and weights, will be used under supervision, along with other sports equipment.

Before signing up for the course children attend an initial personal assessment with one of their parents/guardians present. These assessments last 30 minutes and will enable staff to identify the specific needs and goals of each child so that an appropriate training plan can be drawn up.

At the end of the 8 week period each child will then be assessed to see what improvements have been made in areas such as strength, cardiovascular capacity, weight, flexibility and BMI.

The cost of each course is £60 for the 8 weeks. This is excellent value as the child gets 1 x 30 min individual assessment and 16 x 45 min supervised exercise sessions.
