Whaley Bridge
Whaley Bridge Regeneration Partnership
Actions for 2008-2009
- Secure funding for Masterplan of the Canal Basin and wider Bingswood Industrial Estate, working toward the construction of the Goyt Bridge, over the longer term.
- Support British Waterways with the production of a Feasibility Study for the Transhipment Warehouse. For further details, and to have your say, visit the Heritage Works website (external website**).
- Implement enhancements to the canal towpath between Whaley Bridge and Buxworth, including creating formal access points to the towpath at Tesco and the Grade II listed Horse Tunnel; providing new signage, benches and allowing walks to woodland.
Background
The Whaley Bridge Regeneration Partnership was first set up in 1998, to work together to develop a vision for the regeneration of the centre of Whaley Bridge, the Canal basin and commercial areas. The partnership works with other groups in town to support environmental improvements, as well as initiatives to help the town’s residents and retailers.
Achievements
The town has:
- Offered a Historic Building Grant Scheme (now closed) to assist commercial property owners in the towns to enhance shop frontages through re-instatement of traditional detail;
- Repainted street furniture in Market Street;
- Supported retail business by securing funding to run a farmer’s market, every second Saturday of the month, to encourage people into the town centre;
- Supported High Peak Borough Council’s Shop Smart, Shop Local publicity campaign;
- Secured funding for a young people’s arts project at the station, to encourage people to use the train and establish links with Bugsworth Basin;
- Worked with tourism businesses to encourage people into the town, through the Heart of the High Peak Visitor guide;
- Organised volunteer rangers to clean up ‘grot spots’ in town.
