Dove Holes is a medium sized rural village, lying just outside of the Peak District National Park, with a population of about 450 dwellings, which house about 1,200 residents, living in the main part of the village, next to the A6 highway, or on outlying farms.
The village, three miles from Buxton, in the High Peak, and has several businesses and shops, six farms within Dove Holes and many more within the wider parish, two public houses (one offering accommodation), a general store, a Post Office, and a daily milk delivery service – all making an important contribution towards the economy and vibrancy of the village, as do the quarries which contributed to the development of the village.
The village is served by a church, a Methodist chapel, a community centre and a mobile library and a primary school, with about 80 pupils from the surrounding villages as well as Dove Holes, and various committees which represent a wide variety of interests such as the Community Association, the Parochial Church Council and the Dove Holes Village Group.
Outdoor recreation include cricket and football, a playground, also darts, dominoes, a playgroup, art group, toddler group, sports clubs, indoor bowling, activities for the Over-60s, line dancing, sequence dancing, Keep Fit, golf society and a jazz club, provided by community groups. Residents travel to Buxton or Chapel-en-le-Frith, both three miles away, for the nursery school and secondary school, banks, swimming pool, leisure facilities and medical centres.
