Glossop Environment Week was held from Saturday 30th April to Sunday 8th May 2005. The event was held in conjunction with East Midlands Market Town Week and saw a whole host of activities designed to improve the appearance of key town centre sites and increase awareness of our local environment.
The event was funded by contributions from Glossop Vision, Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership and The Countryside Agency.
Glossop Environment Week had something for everyone, Glossop Vision worked in partnership with a range of local and regional organisations to host activities suitable for all ages. Both adults and children joined in workshops to make instruments from household junk or to make paper using plant fibres, others joined a Blue Badge guide on a treasure trail around Glossop or rolled up their sleeves to help clean up Whitfield Well. Others joined guided walks around town exploring the history of Glossop or seeking out its hidden wildlilfe and schools and youth groups helped with litter busting events at Harehills or joined in the Young Pavement Artist Competition at Manor Park.
Many of the events focused on Glossop brook and the importance of water to Glossop and water certainly proved to be a key feature of the week with frequent downpours and hail storms. Despite the wet weather the events were a great success and marked a real celebration of the Glossop Vision Liveability programme in Glossop.
As part of the Environment week activities Glossop Vision also hosted a special awards ceremony to celebrate the success of the Tidy Glossop Project.
Business representatives attended the ceremony to pick up their well-earned Tidy Business Standards Scheme certificates and window-stickers. Look out for the posters and stickers in shop windows. Local schools and youth groups were also at the event to celebrate their contributions to the Tidy Glossop project. Miles Tewson aged 9, from the Duke of Norfolk School, and representatives from the Hands On! Youth Group proudly received their awards for designing the Tidy Glossop winning poster design and video storyboard. The ceremony was then rounded off with the premiere viewing of the Tidy Glossop video.
