Date: 04/07/2006

Primary school children from across the borough took part in the first High Peak Games at Chapel-en-le-Frith High School last Tuesday.

After the official opening by the High Peak Mayor, Councillor Derek Udale, the children competed in teams representing Buxton (red), Chapel-en-le-Frith (purple), New Mills (green), Glossop (yellow) and Hope Valley (blue).

Amongst the spectators were, Mark Eccleston, double paralympic silver medallist in wheelchair rugby and tennis, and High Peak's Young Sporting Ambassador, Tom Nadin who is a pupil at Chapel-en-le-Frith High School.

The events included: athletics, boccia (similar to bowls), cricket, girls' football, boys' football, hockey, netball, and rugby.

The Mayor and Mark Eccleston presented medals to each event-winning team. The Glossop team were the overall winners of the events and the New Mills team won the Fair Play Award, for the most outstanding sporting behaviour throughout the day.

The High Peak Games were a partnership event organised by High Peak Borough Council's Sports Development Team, High Peak School Sport Partnership, Buxton Community School and St Philip Howard School (which are both designated sports colleges) and Chapel-en-le Frith High School.

Councillor John Pritchard, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Community and Social Development, said: "I want to congratulate all the children who took part in the games and thank the partnership for organising a wonderful community event."
