Glossop Vision's Tidy Glossop project has won an award in the Social and Community Category of the East Midlands Market Towns Awards Scheme.
Now in its third year, the National Market Towns Award Scheme recognises the excellent work being undertaken in the country's market towns and encourages best practice by inviting others to follow these examples.
The Tidy Glossop Project engaged all sectors of the community in reducing litter and waste and creating clean, green areas in the town.
Businesses took part in the Tidy Business Awards and joined the national campaign, Food on the Go. Both schemes encourage businesses to support the local environment, and consider recycling and waste reduction.
Schools participated by using the Tidy Glossop curriculum pack, which featured a range of teaching and research materials, and a copy of the poster and video created by local schoolchildren and youth groups during the pilot phase of the project in 2004.
Local residents played an active part in keeping the town clean using litter-picking equipment provided by Glossop Vision. Others joined Groundwork Erewash Valley to work on small environmental project. The Keep Glossop Tidy message was a key part of Glossop Environment Week in May 2005 when residents took part in a range of activities designed to raise awareness of and improve our local environment.
The Tidy Glossop project, which is also being nominated to win the region's Best Market Town Project, will be published as a best practice case study.
The award will be presented at the East Midland Rural Affairs Forum Conference on 13 July at Pera Innovation Park, Melton Mowbray.
John Hart, Chair of the Glossop Vision Board, said: "Glossop Vision will be accepting the award on behalf of the whole community. It is with great thanks to all the hard work of residents, businesses and schools that the project has been awarded."
