Gamesley Arts Project

Date: 17/07/2006

Youngsters are invited to come along and help "Brighten Up Gamesley" on Thursday 27 and Friday 28 July, in the next stage of the community's art project.

The project is being funded by High Peak Community Housing and will run in conjunction with High Peak Community Arts and Gamesley Community Centre Partnership.

The young people will paint designs onto boards that will then be erected onto garages near the shops on Winster Mews. There is no need to book - youngsters and parents can just turn up on the day.

The finished artwork, which will be completed by mid - September, will provide the springboard for a range of activities to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Gamesley next year.

After a well-attended initial meeting on 1 June lots of ideas were generated. These will be developed by two further workshops on Thursday July 27 for 11 to14 year olds and Friday July 28 for 14 years plus. These are between 1.30 and 3.30 pm at Gamesley Community Centre.

On 1 August, residents will be invited to view the designs from the June and July workshops, at Gamesley Community Centre between 6.00 pm and 7.00 pm.

Following this, two full day workshops will be held on Monday 14 August and Friday 18 August between 10.30 and 4.30. The Gamesley Community Café will provide a free buffet lunch on both days.

The final unveiling of the mural will take place in September.

Pete Dawson, Gamesley Neighbourhood Co-ordinator at High Peak Community Housing, said: "I hope that as many people as possible on the estate will get involved in this project. We are particularly looking to young people to design and paint the project but welcome the involvement of all members of the community in preparing and choosing the final artwork. These workshops will be good fun and exciting for those who get involved."

Councillor John Pritchard, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Community and Social Development, said: "This is a wonderful community project which will brighten up the environment. I am really looking forward to seeing the final artwork."
