Garden waste and cardboard nearing 500 tonnes!

Date: 18/07/2006

As a result of Binnovation, nearly 500 tonnes of green waste have now been sent for composting in the first 9 weeks of the scheme. The hard work of all Glossopdale's residents has paid off - without it, this waste would have been sent to landfill.

The amount of glass, paper, cans and textiles being recycled in green boxes has hit an all time high, with 380 tonnes collected Borough-wide in June - the highest since green boxes were introduced. Eight Borough residents were recently awarded £50 for their recycling efforts, as part of the Kerbside Incentive Scheme (KISS).

Councillor Glynis Kirk, High Peak Borough Council Executive Member for the Environment, thanked Glossopdale residents for their efforts: "It is brilliant that Glossopdale residents have been so enthusiastic in their efforts to recycle, please keep up the good work."

Councillor Kirk also offered some advice on how to maintain their bins during the hot weather: "We recommend that residents try to keep the bins out of the sun, and keep lids shut at all times. Any food waste can be double wrapped before placing it in the bin, and carbon filters which fit on the inside of the bin lid can absorb any odours."

She added: "The warm weather also means people are doing more gardening so I would recommend that residents line the bottom of the green bin with cardboard to prevent grass sticking to the bottom."
