High Peak Borough Council wants to ensure that residents and businesses know about the new Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) regulations, which mean that producers of electrical equipment have a responsibility to take back customers' old appliances when they purchase new ones.
The new regulations will help to control the impact on the environment caused through the disposal of used electrical goods and electronic equipment. They encourage the separate collection of these items from other refuse, and their subsequent treatment, which could be re-use, recycling or environmentally safe disposal.
There are four ways to dispose of old electrical items.
1) Contact the manufacturer of the product to see if they have a take back scheme.
2) When buying a replacement product from a manufacturer, see that they have a take back scheme for the old appliance.
3) Take the old appliance to the civic amenity site or "tip" in Melandra Road, Glossop.
4) Contact the council and arrange for the item to be collected. There may be a charge for this.
Councillor John Haken, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said: "It is important that the producers of these goods are involved in reducing the amount of goods being manufactured, and in increasing re-use and recycling. We rely on residents to help us protect the environment, so please remember the new regulations if you are shopping for these products. If the manufacturers will take the old items away, it is one less job for you to sort out."
If you have any enquiries about waste disposal please call the council's call centre on 0845 129 77 77.
