Nominate your New Mills grot spots

Date: 31/08/2007

Members of the public are being asked to help with the 'Big Derbyshire Clean up' when it moves to New Mills in October.

The New Mills clean up, which is a partnership project funded by High Peak Borough Council -through the 'Going Local' campaign, Derbyshire County Council and New Mills Town Council will focus on the Torrs and the town centre areas.

The work, which is to help make people feel they are in a safe environment, will include:

Members of the public are being invited to nominate other parts of the town, where fly tipping, graffiti, litter, and broken street lights could be targeted in the clean up.

The team particularly want to hear from young people and their parents about dirty and untidy areas - or 'grot spots' - on the routes to and from schools. Suggestions about how these places could be improved to make them feel safer will be welcomed, as one of the key aims is to enable children to walk to and from school.

Residents are also being invited to sign up as volunteer environmental rangers to help with the clean up.

Councillor David Lomax, Chair of the Central Area Forum, said: "Going Local is all about making our communities cleaner, greener and safer. Please let us know about any areas that you think need attention. Better still, sign up as a volunteer and come along and help - you will be most welcome."

People can nominate 'grot spots' by completing a form on-line at www.highpeak.gov.uk /neighbourhood/town_feedback.asp; by emailing Helen Pakpahan at Helenp@highpeak.gov.uk, or by writing to her at the Council Offices, Hayfield Road, Chapel-en-le-Frith, High Peak SK23 0QJ. The locations should be as specific as possible and photographs would be helpful.

Those who would like to be a volunteer for a day - or longer, should contact Rachel Billings at Groundwork Derbyshire 0845 129 77 77 extension 3527.
