Glossopdale Community College in Hadfield is going to have a state of the art sports pitch, which will be available to all of the community.
The new artificial pitch will be a major boost for sport in Glossop and the High Peak, providing all-year round facilities, not only for the college, but also for primary schools and youth groups. It will also enable an extended school programme and world-class training and match facilities for Glossop based football and hockey clubs.
The full size pitch will be made of an artificial grass surface of the highest national standards.
It will be floodlit and capable of being divided into 3 sections. The recently refurbished facilities at the College mean that the new pitch will have fully accessible toilets and changing rooms.
The £650,000 project includes funding towards a Football Development Officer for five years to promote the use of the facilities.
High Peak Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council, Glossopdale Community College and the Football Foundation have funded the project, which features in the High Peak Sports Facilities Strategy and the Derbyshire Football Plan.
John Hart, Principal of Glossopdale Community College, said: "I am delighted that a much needed sports facility is coming to Hadfield. It will extend the range of sporting activities that the College is able to offer to its students, primary school children and to a wide range of other sporting clubs within the Glossopdale area. We are particularly pleased that it will further strengthen our links with Glossop North End Football Club."
Councillor Andrew Bingham, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Community and Social Development, said: "I am absolutely delighted, this is fantastic news, and a great Christmas present for Glossop. The Council's aim is to encourage all of the community - young people especially - to keep fit and healthy. This pitch will be able to offer so many different opportunities for people both young and old to play a wide variety of sports without having to travel into Manchester or other areas. Who knows, it may help us unearth the next David Beckham right here in Glossop!"
