New floor for Hayfield Scout Hut - with a little help from friends

Date: 30/01/2007

Hayfield Scout Hut has a brand new floor - thanks to a £1,000 grant from High Peak Community Housing, and the free labour provided by local craftsmen.

The housing company"s Central Area Tenants Panel provided the grant to buy the materials to lay the floor, and their generosity has been matched by the time and effort put in by local residents.

"The scout hut is used as a resource for the whole community and we are happy to be able to help fund the new floor," said Keith Wood, Vice-Chairman of High Peak Community Housing"s Central Area Tenants Panel. "Many of our tenants use the hut and this is one of many grants for local groups and facilities that the Central Area Tenants Panel has made this year."

The scout hut is well equipped with modern facilities and disabled access and toilet. While providing a suitable venue for more than 50 local scouts, it is also used by many local organisations as a meeting place " from the local band to the May Queen and fell-runners!

"We are happy to accommodate more scouts, in addition to the 50 or so 8-14 year-olds we already have in our group," said Scout Master Ian Platt. "We also hire out the hut for parties, other group meetings, etc, and these fees help to maintain the building.

"We are very grateful to High Peak Community Housing and the local people who are giving their labour free to fit the floor, which is specially designed to be flexible to prevent injury."

The next meeting of the HPCH Central Area Tenants Panel will be held on Tuesday, March 20, at 7.30pm, at the Royal Hotel. It is open to all HPCH tenants.

The panel welcomes grant applications from local groups and individuals. Area tenants panels are also held in Buxton and Glossop.
