Girls urged to sign up for half term football festival

Date: 29/01/2007

High Peak Sports Development Team is inviting girls, aged 8 to 14, to take part in a girls' football festival this half term.

The festival will take place on Valentine's Day, Wednesday, February 14, 2007, at New Mills Astroturf in Church Lane, New Mills, between 1pm and 4pm.

The event is being organised by High Peak Girls' Football Development Group - a partnership between High Peak Borough Council, High Peak Schools Sport Partnership, specialist sports colleges, clubs and the Football Association (FA).

At the festival, the participants will be able to demonstrate their skills in tournaments and penalty shoot-outs.

Representatives from local girls' football clubs will be attending, including Buxton Juniors, Gamesley Villa, Glossop North End and New Mills - all FA Charter Standard clubs.

Specially trained junior football organisers - girls aged between 14 and 16, from Glossopdale Community College, St Philip Howard, Chapel High School, Buxton Community School and St Thomas More School - will be helping to run the festival.

Councillor John Pritchard, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Community and Social Development, said: "Make sure you sign up to take part in the football festival at half term. It sounds like a challenging and enjoyable way to spend an afternoon."

Girls, aged between 8 and 14 years, who wish to take part in the festival, should register their places by calling Helen Ashworth at High Peak Borough Council on 0845 129 7777 extension 2211.

Girls, aged between 14 and 16 years, who are interested in becoming junior football organisers, should call Dawn Richardson on 0845 129 7777 extension 2210.
