Last week saw one of the largest volunteer events ever to take place in Pavilion Gardens with nearly 100 volunteers coming forward to offer their support and time.
The one-day project involved the:
· construction and erection of bird boxes;
· edging of paths;
· making and selling of plant containers and baskets;
· planting of over 1000 wild flowers in the Serpentine Meadow;
· weeding of hard surfaces in the town; and
· tending the gardens at Milnthorpe Homes.
High Peak Borough Council, working in partnership with the Friends of Pavilion Gardens,
Buxton in Bloom and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, organised this impressive community project with the majority of volunteers coming from local church congregations based in the Macclesfield and Hyde areas, which extend into the High Peak.
Bishop Ian Burgess was delighted with the opportunity for the congregations to help make a practical difference to Buxton. He said: "Across the whole of the country volunteers from the church are working to help local communities. It is a privilege to help here in Buxton, where some of our local members live."
The event coincided with the judging of Buxton in the East Midlands in Bloom competition.
Speaking on behalf of Buxton in Bloom, their Chair, Jane Mcgrother stated: "The volunteers have really helped make the town cleaner and brighter, which will help with our efforts to secure a gold medal in the competition this year."
The Mayor Councillor Jean Wharmby an active member of a Friends Group in Glossop (Howard Park) met with the volunteers on the day.
Councillor John Faulkner, Leader of High Peak Borough Council, said: "This is a wonderful example of how the Council can work in partnership with volunteers and partners to make our Borough more attractive."
