Vacancy in the Borough's Standards Committee

Date: 01/03/2007

High Peak Borough Council is looking for a public-spirited person to become an independent member of the council's Standards Committee.

The Standards Committee plays a vital role in promoting and maintaining the highest standards of conduct by the councillors of High Peak Borough Council and all the parish councils in its area.

Two members of the committee are completely independent of the borough and parish councils, and are appointed rather than elected. As well as their other duties, independent members deal with complaints about member misconduct.

One of the independent members is about to leave the appointment and a replacement is needed. The appointment is for a period of four years and there is a small annual allowance, in recognition of the important and responsible role played by an independent member. Travel and subsistence allowance and care allowances are also payable.

Independent members must not be associated with any political party, and cannot have been a High Peak Borough councillor or officer during the last five years, or be a relative or close friend of a High Peak councillor or officer. They should also live in the borough, have some knowledge of local government and have a commitment to high standards of behaviour, in all aspects of public and private life.

Standards Committee meetings are held at the Council Offices, in Chapel-en-le-Frith, four times a year, normally in the evening.

The closing date for applications is Monday 26 March 2007.

Please apply to Rosemary Stafford, Head of Legal and Democratic Services, Council Offices, Hayfield Road, Chapel-en-le-Frith, High Peak, SK23 0QJ for an application form and further details, or log on to the Council"s website at www.highpeak.gov.uk/aboutus/vacancy.asp.
