Count down to a smoke-free High Peak

Date: 27/03/2007

In less than 100 days, it will be illegal to smoke in any enclosed public place in the High Peak.

The new law, which starts on 1 July 2007, is to protect workers and the non-smoking public from the effects of passive smoking.

All businesses will need to make sure that they will be able to comply with the new law from 1 July.

Guidance and free no smoking signs will be sent out by the Government to all businesses registered at Companies House, from April.

High Peak Borough Council will also be publicising the new law and providing guidance and signs through our website. Businesses will be required to display these signs at specified entrances. Details will be given in the guidance information.

Councillor Glynis Kirk, High Peak Borough Council"s Executive Member for the Environment, said: "It is estimated that 70 per cent of the businesses who think they will be compliant with the new smoke-free law, will not be - and High Peak Borough Council wants to make sure the transition and preparation is as easy as it can be.

"The council"s aim is to ensure that people can gain access to the right information, and that we are producing information which is consistent with our partners in Derbyshire."
