Local Residents bag £50 reward for shopping local

Date: 13/11/2007

The 'Shop Smart, Shop Local' campaign is particularly popular with 3 local residents who have won £50 each for supporting independent local traders.

Mr Maurice Norton from Sherwood Road in Buxton, Mr Edward Green from Hallsteads in Dove Holes and Mrs Ilana Alix of Lesley Street, Glossop are £50 better off because they took part in the 'Shop Smart, Shop Local' passport scheme, which started in October.

The passport scheme, with monthly prize draws, is open to all residents over 16 across the High Peak.

Residents can pick up their 'passports' at participating retailers who display the 'Shop Smart, Shop Local' sticker in their windows. Additional passports will be in the next issue of the council's Connect magazine - due out at the end of November.

Under the passport scheme, each time a customer buys something from a participating shop, they will receive a sticker, regardless of the amount spent. When one of the sections on the passport has been completed, it can be handed in or posted to one of the town halls at Buxton, Chapel-en-le-Frith, New Mills or Whaley Bridge or Glossop Municipal Buildings.

Residents in the Hope Valley are also encouraged to participate and can send in their completed passports directly to the council.

The monthly prize draws are a short-term programme to reward and encourage residents who shop locally. It will run for another 5 months.

Councillor Tony Kemp, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Regeneration, said: "Congratulations to our first passport winners! We have a good range of shops in our towns, which we need to support. Our message is shop local wherever possible."

All of the borough's independent shopkeepers should have received their stickers and passports. If any retailers would like an additional 'Shop Smart, Shop Local' kit they should contact Helen Pakpahan or Sarah Porru on 0845 129 77 77.
