Flood defence fair to help homes and businesses

Date: 17/10/2007

Derbyshire County Council is organising a flood defence fair to help residents protect their homes and businesses.

The fair will take place at the Agricultural Business Centre, Agricultural Way, Bakewell on Wednesday 24 October from 10am to 8pm. Admission is free.

Visitors will be able to examine products that they can buy to protect their property. They will also have the opportunity to find out if they live in a high-risk area and how to receive early flood warnings.

This summer's floods caused millions of pounds worth of damage and affected almost 1,000 homes and around 100 businesses in Derbyshire.

The county council was on hand with the emergency services and district and borough colleagues to deal with thousands of calls for help during the worst of the wet weather in June.

During four days at the height of the crisis the county's emergency planning team distributed 20,000 sandbags and set up shelters for people whose homes were uninhabitable.

At the Flood Defence Fair, visitors will be able to:

Visitors will also be able to pick up a stock of empty sandbags to help them guard against future floods.

Councillor John Haken, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said: "We were very lucky in High Peak to escape the extreme flooding that affected other parts of Derbyshire last summer. If you know that your property is vulnerable to flooding, then it might be worth a trip to the Flood Defence Fair."
