Councillors tell schools about Local Democracy Week

Date: 17/10/2007

Councillors and officers from High Peak Borough Council have been visiting local secondary schools this week - as part of Local Democracy Week - to find out what really matters to young people and describe how our democratic system works.

This national campaign has been organised by the Borough Council, and is supported by Derbyshire County Council's schools.

Local Democracy Week aims to encourage young people to develop an active interest in community issues and to feedback their views on local services.

Young people will have the opportunity to take part in workshops where they will learn what part they can play in the democratic process, and the importance of using their vote in adult life.

Councillor John Faulkner, Leader of High Peak Borough Council, said: "Local Democracy Week gives young people the opportunity to learn about how their services are delivered by local authorities, the role of council officers as well as how decisions are made and implemented. It presents an opportunity to discuss how all members of the community play a vital part in shaping local communities."

Residents who would like to read about the feedback from the workshops, can find them on the young people's website at www.sourceofthepeak.co.uk at the end of October.

Further information about Local Democracy Week and involvement with the website are available from Lesley Stevens at High Peak Borough Council on 0845 129 77 77 ext. 2057, email LesleyS@highpeak.gov.uk.
