Volunteers are being invited to help clean up areas in Whaley Bridge on Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 September.
The Whaley Bridge Amenity Society and Friends of Memorial Park, are organising a clean up of the Memorial Park. The Amenity Society will also be working to remove litter from Randall Carr Brook and the River Goyt, in the Horwich End and Bridge Street areas. Representatives from the council's grounds maintenance team will be on hand with bags, litter pickers and gloves to assist all budding volunteers.
The event is part of the MWH Mersey Basin Week, which has been held every autumn for the last 15 years. It is the biggest event of its kind in the Northwest, and attracts hundreds of people who get involved in a multitude of water related activities throughout the region.
All of those interested in joining the clean up squads are invited to meet at the Wheatsheaf Road entrance to the Memorial Park at 10 am on Saturday 29 September; and at 10 am in Tom Brad's Croft Car Park on Sunday 30 September. Both events are expected to last for 2 hours. A hot pot lunch will be available at the Navigation Inn (off Canal Street) at noon on Sunday.
Councillor Andrew Bingham, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Social and Community Development said: "This annual event is another opportunity where the council is delighted to work with local groups and volunteers to enhance one of our treasured beauty spots in Whaley Bridge."
Councillor John Pritchard, Chair of the Whaley Bridge Amenity Society and the Etherow Goyt Partnership, said: "One of the aims of the society is to stimulate public interest in, and care for, the beauty, history and character of Whaley Bridge and its surroundings. The autumn clean-up provides a chance for volunteers to come along and give us a hand. If you are interested, you will be more than welcome."
