Despite the miserable weather, a lot of High Peak young people were happy to get wet in the summer holidays - at the borough's swimming pools.
Figures confirm that the council's free swimming offer to all children under 16 throughout the school break, has resulted in a massive boost to pool attendances.
For the second year running, Buxton, Glossop and New Mills pools offered free swimming over the holidays during public swimming sessions. Attendances at Glossop pool have more than trebled when compared to those of 2005. At Buxton and New Mills pools the attendances have more than doubled.
The free swim promotion was part of the council's wider commitment to encourage young people in particular to become actively involved in sports and pastimes that reduce anti-social behaviour, and improve health and lifestyles.
Councillor Andrew Bingham, High Peak Borough Council's Executive Member for Social and Community Development, said: "The free swimming offer aimed to encourage young people to keep fit and healthy during the summer. I am delighted to see that youngsters have taken advantage of the promotion."
